On machine connectivity, and why the physical world cannot keep depending on a person standing next to the machine.

One

The human was the fallback.

You try to pay. The terminal says no connection. The payment fails.

So you take out your phone, open Maps, and look for the nearest ATM. And your phone works perfectly.

The Internet was there. The terminal simply could not reach it.

It depended on one path, one network, one configuration, and had no intelligent way to recover when that path failed.

For years we accepted this, because the human became the fallback. You tried another card. You waited. You paid in cash.

The machine failed, but the human completed the task. We did not solve machine connectivity because, for a long time, we did not have to.

Two

Now we do.

Payments, vehicles, robots, chargers, drones, sensors and autonomous equipment are becoming connected computers operating in the real world.

There were roughly 4.5 billion cellular IoT connections by the end of 2025, moving toward 8 billion by 2031. But the bigger shift is what those devices are becoming.

A sensor used to send a temperature. A robot sends video, telemetry, maps, diagnostics and model updates.

The Internet was built around humans downloading information. The next one will be shaped by machines uploading the physical world.

Connectivity stops being a convenience. It becomes infrastructure.

Three

The human fallback is disappearing.

A robot in a field does not open Maps to find an alternative. A remote charger cannot walk to an ATM. A drone cannot ask someone to reset its modem.

A disconnected phone is frustrating. A disconnected machine is an operation that stops.

In industry, transport, energy, public safety and defense logistics, connectivity cannot be treated as best effort.

Four

Machines need a different Internet.

A machine should not care which carrier is underneath. Its manufacturer should not have to manage carrier portals, APNs, roaming agreements and country-specific configurations.

Connectivity should be programmable, observable, measurable and resilient. And eventually autonomous.

Wigoo is building a software connectivity layer for connected machines.

A manufacturer integrates once. Every device it ships comes online, and stays online. Nobody has to become a telecom company first.

Five

Being online is not enough.

Platforms tell you that a device is connected, or that it used 82 MB. That is not enough for an autonomous machine.

A machine can be online while its connection is too poor for the task. Telemetry still works. Video fails. Remote intervention becomes unsafe. A model update should have waited.

The question is not whether the machine is online. It is whether the connection is good enough for what it needs to do right now.

Six

Connectivity becomes intelligence.

Every connected machine produces signal quality, latency, jitter, packet loss, reconnects, carrier, location, firmware and energy behaviour. Individually these are metrics. Across millions of machines they become intelligence.

Is this machine healthy. Is it about to disconnect. Is this one device or a regional outage. Is the problem the carrier, the hardware, the firmware or the place. Which network actually performs best here.

Failures announce themselves. Signal deteriorates, latency rises, reconnects multiply. Patterns emerge before the machine goes down.

The goal is to move from failure detection to failure prediction.

Seven

The network becomes a sensor.

Not a marketing coverage map. A map built from real machines in real environments: where dead zones recur, which carrier wins on which route, which firmware release increases reconnects, where congestion is emerging.

A machine following a known route can know that the network degrades a few hundred meters ahead, and prepare. Buffer, delay, switch, move the workload local.

The cheapest network per gigabyte is rarely the cheapest one to operate. Retries, downtime and weak radio conditions are paid in uptime and in battery.

The machine should not only know that it is connected. It should know what that connection is capable of.

Eight

Our belief.

We tolerated machine connectivity failures because humans were always there to compensate. That era is ending.

Billions of machines are becoming autonomous and data-intensive. They will need an Internet designed for machines. Where connectivity is not manually configured. Where failure is predicted instead of discovered. Where fleets learn from every connection.

And where a machine does not stop simply because one network fails.
